Indexing stuck at 26%
I'm tryng to run Google Desktop Search on a Windows 2000 Pro box. For about the last week, it has just sat there; when I move the cursor over the Tray icon, it says "Google Desktop Search index update in progress. 26% complete."
Now it may be that the message is wrong, and my machine has been indexed, or the message is correct and something's preventing it from completing the index. Any ideas? Thanks, -A. |

Well, I downloaded TweakGDS and deleted the search files, and set GDS up so as to search only my hard disk drives, and set it off again. After a while it claimed "53%" and I thought: success! A bit later on it reported "19%", and now it's stuck back on "25%".
Maybe I should conclude that GDS is yet another failed windows search software? (Under linux, I can use GNU locate, which works like a dream. However, it's unfair to compare a working system like linux with a hacked up monster like windows...) -A. |

On my system, it's always stuck at 95%. And even then, GDS works pretty good: it finds all of the files that I ask it to find. There might be some problem with the way the indexing counter is running, I agree.
I have tried other desktop search software offered by Copernic, Yahoo and X1, but found them inferior to GDS. Yes, I think it would be unfair to compare the two OSs. GDS is made for Windows, and should be compared with other similar programs for that system. |

It may be the difference in whats its comparing. Its likely comparing the number of files in your hard drive that windows says there are with the number of files its allowed to look at. Windows reports hidden files and folders in the first number, but it probably doesn't let it index hidden files. So, the more other files you have, the higher your percentage. If you have a fairly new windows system, you have almost 16,000 windows files to your system's. On my newest computer (6 months) I have 40,000 files non-windows and that includes the documents and setting folder that has hidden files and folders.
