Finding deleted files with Google Desktop search
I watched the BBC program The world according to Google which was on the BBC a couple of weeks ago and it said that you can find deleted files with Google Desktop search.
Do you know if this is true and if there is a setting or option to search for deleted files as I couldn't find one? Thanks in advance, Kev |

Let me explain. The thing is, when you install Google Desktop, it asks you whether you want the files on your computer to be indexed by Google or not. Indexing means keeping a copy of the metadata of the file on Google's servers.
When you search Desktop, Google does provide you with the location of deleted files that were indexed, and later deleted from your computer. That way, you can surely find them. But you can't open them. Google links the name of the file to the file on your computer, and as it is deleted files you're talking about, you'll get an error saying that Windows cannot find the file. Hope that helps. |

Ok thanks. I was under the impression you could perhaps reopen a cached version of the file.
Just noticed on the BBC News site today that there are privacy fears about the desktop search: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/4700002.stm |

Hi,
If some of you files are erased you can actually restore them with data recovery tools such as Active@ Undelete or Uneraser(for DOS). These are truly mighty utils as they never failed me before. It's restore algorithm also never corrupted recovered files. http://www.active-undelete.com/ http://www.uneraser.com/ |
