Unable to connect Gmail

Additional Info: Google Talk also cannot connect...though I can connect to it via Jabber in Trillian...seems likely there's some common link between Google Desktop's inability to index my gmail account and google talk's inability to connect...i'd like to blame spybot but i've got it on another machine w/o problems so...any advise???
