Unable to connect Gmail

i get the following error in Google Desktop. i dont know how to fix it. please suggest me something.br
br
bUnable to connect to Gmail. Possible firewall configuration issue./bbr

Please check that port 995 is not blocked by your firewall or contact your system administrator for help.
Google Desktop will try to connect to Gmail every 10 minutes until this problem is fixed or Gmail
search is disabled.br

Change your firewall settings Normally you just have to open up your firewall program, and change Google Desktop Search from "Blocked" to "Allow Internet Access". Try to do that.

Actually I dont know what does 'Firewall' means. I'm using Mozilla and
McAfee anti-virus program. Does any settings in these programs might
have got me into this problem?

Open up McAfee firewall, and click on Internet Aplications on the left pane and scroll down to find the Google Desktop Search. If it is "Blocked", click on it, and click on "Change permission to: Allow Full Access" in the bottom right hand corner of the window.

How are you connected to the Internet?
Are you on a network? Do you use a router?

That could be it, then. Check your router documentation on how to allow that specific port that's required.

Unable to connect to Gmail. Possible firewall configuration issue.

Hi,
My Google Desktop (version: 5.1.0709.19590-en-pb because the newest one a) has the same problem and b) doesn't work with Firefox if you disable Web History) is giving me the above error EVEN THOUGH I have no problem accessing Port 995 everytime I check my gmail email account using Thunderbird. I'm running Win2k with all updates & Firefox 2.0.0.11 & Spybot1.4. I am behind a router but since I get my POP gmail emails w/o any problem I can't believe it's the issue...plus I enabled port 995 forwarding and it made no difference. No firewall software (though spybot does apparently block access to certain malware websites). Worked fine up until I upgraded to Google Desktop 5.5..now stepped back to 5.1 but problem persists...advise?
