Google Maps Profile Pages - Social Networking?

A feature traditionally seen as a primary staple of social networks has come to Google Maps. Now, when you come across a map someone created, or a review someone write, there's a new Profile Page in Google Maps which lets you hover over the person's name to see a snippet of information about the author.

Click the name, and access his or her complete profile page. This aggregates all the public maps and reviews he or she has created on Google Maps!

You can customize your own profile picture and information by clicking the "My Profile" link.

I believe this has changed a little bit since this original post? Or am I thinking of something else/
