This is another name for IEEE 802.11. It is a term coined by the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA). Products certified as Wi-Fi by WECA are interoperable with each other even if they are from different manufacturers. A user with a Wi-Fi product can use any brand of Access Point with any other brand of client hardware that is built to the Wi-Fi standard.
The fact there's an access point suggests to me it's a star topology network. What if you're connected up to a wireless network in a bus or ring topology. Does this not mean that there are other ways apart from Wi-Fi to connect to networks?
Without being rude(honestly), do you know what you are talking about?

First of all, why are we now talking about topologies?

Second, the AP acts as an point for the 802.11a/b/g clients to connect to the wired network. That part of it is a logical star topology. But your network can be a hybrid of mesh, ring, bus, or star. If you know how to set it up you can use any or all of the above.

Regarding your final question... there are 2 basic ways of connecting to a network(in the capacity we are discussing). Wired, and wireless.

OK, textbooks seem to be getting worse nowadays. HowStuffWorks and various other places seem to agree more with you. I think I now do too. Sorry for any confusion caused.

Not a problem. I was starting to think either someone has very poorly educated you in the home networking world or I was going crazy. I am glad it wasn't the latter...

So far I've catalogued a few friend's houses, found my university and more. I've also familiarised myself with several cities from the air as well as the ground.

It's good fun when you know the cities you're exploring.

i'm a little dissapointed that certain areas are not higher resolution yet.
