Google's Motive

Besides the fact of improving Google Maps, why is Google sponsoring such an expensive venture? (I assume it's expensive). Are they eventually going to have a tracking service integrating GPS with the Google Earth Program? Anyone have ideas?

It's just all part of Google's plan to take over the world.
OK, joke over. I think it's to get Google in a good mood with shareholders - after paying $400 for one share they're going to want some seriously high quality services.

they are working on a gps like system for vw cars:bra href="http://blog.deadlycomputer.com/2006/02/12/39/"blog post/abrBut as far as i can remember there were websites online that allowed you to view your house from space (terraserver anyone?). And, the images always sucked, and were always 20 years old.brGoogle just wanted to update that index.brBesides, Google Earth started out as Keyhole. Keyhole was one of the things google bought with its ipo money. When google finds something it likes, it puts their entire force behind it.brbrI also agree that google will be the future rulers of the world in about 2 years, but i dont think that has as much to do with the rest of this post. brbr

I've got to the point where I give all information I need to Google.
They may be taking over the world, but they are doing it for good (and money obviously) but their work ethics are totally different from world leaders such as Micro$oft and the likes.

Google can database my information and if everyone gives them their information as well, we would have a much better place to live (in my mind), information would be far more accessable and organised.

The more advanced and the more details their maps willm becoming the more likely people are to use it. Personally I've been playing around with google maps and I've marked a few of my friend's houses on google earth. i've also been travelling to quite a few cities and on google earth I can see them as well.

within the last two days I found one version of google earth that finds the best route from one street in London to another thanks to the Londonist. It's great to have such useful maps available.

It's interesting to geography students who are studying urbanisation. to study how certain cities are mapped in various ways.

If you're looking for a business and it's marked it's street address on the site then google will take you there immediatly, whichever country you're in. Of course the resolution is usually higher for the US but it's a matter of time before they map more of the world.

Have you also noticed that those who take aerial pictures have been adding those to areas that have not been mapped yet?

I love it.

google maps and google earth are quite different. google maps are based on maps, so google employees have drawn the maps, on the other side, google earth is based on satellite-photos.
