I'm making the switch to Ubuntu, but I (a) like my Google Talk interface, and (b) want to keep Google Talk & MSN separate, so I can't use Pidgin for them both (can I?). I use the Gmail Notifier function, too, so launching it from the web doesn't really solve the problem.
So-- Wine? Any other suggestions? |

It doesn't work in Wine at all. Use Pidgin for both. You can set up as many IM accounts as you want in Pidgin. Your conversations aren't saved in your Gmail account but you can use it just fine.
Another alternative would be to use the Gmail chat interface or the gTalk gadget. |

I am using Pidgin, and it works quite well, I just hate that it doesn't save my chats properly, and also that I don't notice when I get new e-mails. Same issue with chatting in Gmail - I don't notice replies. I would use the Firefox Gtalk sidebar, or the gadget, but I confess I haven't managed to install Flash Player 9 yet.
I don't suppose the Gmail notifier works any better.. |

I've never tried the notifier under Linux. Frankly, since I upgraded my Mac desktop and MacBook Pro I haven't used my Linux machines much. I miss them, but right now with these two computers being new I am happy to be back to Mac mostly.
The notifier application for mail and calendar work GREAT on my Mac. I know you don't care about that. Just sayin. |

My Linux desktop and laptop are retired WinXP business machines. My Macs replace an old G4 tower and Titanium Powerbook. The desktop was an 800Mhz model and the PW was a 450Mhz machine. I still used both nearly every day for email and web surfing. Given the power of these two machines I am installing Parallels Desktop and WinXP on both to see if I can run my business software on them without a performance hit. If so, I will have some very new and very fast Linux hardware to play with. |
