i think google talk doesn't have a very bright future right now since we are talking about competitors like ICQ, MS and Yahoo (who have been in the industry for years). But if google decide to keep investing and add innovative features like the chat function they have on Gmail, I am sure they will catch up eventually (tho it might take long).

brbrHighly doubt it since Microsoft is a competitor to Google and MSN and Yahoo have teamed up.br
brbrOf course forgetting for a moment that one can already use GTalk client to talk to AOL/ICQ/Yahoo/MSN friends by utilising Jabber transports/gateways.br

brYou forgot to mention that it hardly works and messages usually get lost (atleast for me they do).br

Your experience hardly proves anything, at most that you're using badly maintained transports/have it improperly configured. For me it works perfectly. OTOH I have no problem with acces to high quality transports - Jabber is strong in my country for a looong time.

Ummm I probably just missed it but when is this supposed to happen? Is it just "soon" or is there a tentative date set for it.

This site shows you how to allow communication with other networks through Google Talk:

http://www.bigblueball.com/forums/go...msn-yahoo.html

I plan to try it because I use AIM Express at work and it sucks with a lag, missed messages and IMs forwarded to my phone even when I'm online. But I don't even know if this site's "hack" will work at all or whether it will also work in Gmail chat, which is what I want.

It works. You can't IM a Google Talk account with your AIM account or vice versa. But you can use Google Talk like GAIM or Trillian and be logged onto more than one network. My Gmail chat contacts list now in addition shows my AIM buddies.

This turned out to more more problematic and I had to undo all of it. I'll play around with it again later.
