Using more than one messenger is generally what I do.But seeing as how my computer is older than me in dog years, I don't run them at the same time. Trillian is an okay solution, and trillian PRO is okay, but when you make an application that unifies four totally different ones, it tends to be uncompatable with the lesser known features. I know that my friend who uses trillian can't even see audibles from YSM. You think if they wanted to market it as an IMing solution, they'd include that. Then again, google talk can access more programs than trillian, so if your just looking to IM people (No video, smileys, etc.) its a nice choice.

Google Talk would be great if I had people to talk to. I hate all of these extra features. Video is slow on the computer, sound you need a microphone. I dont want to buy extra equipment for something crazy. I like simple IM programs. They're great.

Can't find anyone? I know its compatable with all IMs on a certain network, read the FAQ on it, I'm sure there is a list somewhere. Also, trust me, a microphone is a VERY nice thing to have. Just grab a cheap one.

Rubbish excuse:
You can turn off the chat in GMail. Go down to the bottom and choose 'Standard without chat'.
