I like Google Talk best because it is nowhere near as bloated as MSNM and YIM. However it currently lacks certain features that I would like (for example video messaging, display pictures and logging that is searchable by Google Desktop). MSN has quite alot of irritating features like nudges, winks, and custom emoticons. It also seems to be much lighter to run and nicer to look at than MSN. I am also happy the Google Talk uses an open standard and that Google is helping/making it easier for other messengers to work with Google Talk. Google Talk isn't covered in adverts, actually it has none. So thus I conclude that Google Talk is the best and will be even better with the next version that may integrate it with AIM (partially due to Google's deal with AOL and its 5% shareholding).

Hard to Decide
As for me I have accounts on all of the messengers. I also evaluated the messengers but you cannot rule the best among them. My tests were based on bandwidth and location of contacts I have. Yahoo Messenger and MSN Messenger are having trouble with system resources. As long as you keep them signed in they take up memory and processor usage even from faster computers. I have noticed that certain times to transfer files on both messengers you have to reconnect them. Tests were done on bandwidths ranging from 256Kbs - 1Megabit. Yahoo Messenger works best with voice even on slower connections. Also connects faster. MSN has ultimate features for chatting experience. Voice is perfect only if both the parties have faster connection such as Cable/DSL or leased line. Google Talk is excellent being simple and lesser buttons but giving you the same features as others. Flex thing is good you hover your mouse and options float. Plus its voice is excellent but again limited to faster connections. As for Windows Live Messenger, Application is still heavy, but it has best features at the moment that any other IM App. I am a Google Fan, but Micorosft's integration with rest of their services and products is best. The new Live platform is also fully dynamic and rich with features. Unfortunately, all these liberties can be enjoyed on faster internet connections basically starting from 256K onwards if you really want to have fun and get work done. I recently read the rating from PCworld. MSN 7.5 Messenger is ranked as the best IM around. I hope my information doesnt conflict with anyone's regard for their likings. To be honest, I have accounts on all IM's and they are all used when one or the other fails somewhere. Kind regards, H |
