I teach high school computer graphics classes with Gimp as my software of choice. Photoshop is too expensive and I like teaching about open source software.

Learning the Gimp is about the same as learning Photoshop: both are bad examples of the "sit and fiddle with it" school. Both do well with some HOWTOs and tutorials handy.

I highly recommend the self-study course that starts here: http://linuxchix.org/pipermail/cours...ry/001590.html.

I'd have to agree with you on that one. I've known about GIMP for a while and used once or twice. Personally, I do prefer Photoshop, and I'm still using 6.0. GIMP can do some things better than Photoshop, but Photoshop can also do things that GIMP cannot do. Both programs can do awesome imagework, though, keep that in mind. Also, Photoshop works automatically with ImageReady for making .gif animations. Of course, there are other animation programs out there.

One thing I would like to mention about both programs though: they don't do high quality 3D renders, like what Blender can do. I've been meaning to fiddle with Blender and learn how to use it, but I am far too lazy to bother trying. Not to mention, I have too much school work that I should be doing...even if I'm never doing it.

DA GIMP!

I have only just recently downloaded the gimp and found it absolutly brillient for changing many many pictures, I found it particularly good for editing pictures to post on a photoshop / gimp competition website where you get an image or subject which you have to edit or get a picture and edit to make it different e.g. having to edit a picture of a famous person to make them look older or younger, the address is www.worth1000.com i reccomend it alot, so if your thinking of downloading the gimp i would very much so suggest that you go ahead and download it, even if you are on dial up
