How do I get a transparent background?

How do you get a transparent background for an avatar. I cannot work out how to do it. I have access to Paint and Paint Shop Pro 7...will I be able to do it with them? If not, I could download a free version of a graphics package off the internet (trial version). Please tell me how to do it...

i use photoshop and its very easy to make it transparent....i am not sure though with paintshop....i'll play around with it.

i think the retail price is around....600 or sumthing like that..but if you go to like ebay or sumthing you can get a new in box version cheaper.

well, I remember using Paintshop long back.. as far as I remeber, u can add transparency to an image while exporting it as GIF.. try lookin around there n u might get it..

i no photoshop is expensive, but in the long run, it is very useful...and you can have alot of fun with it too

OMG!!! i just set an animated.gif as my wallpaper! my head is s-pinning off man!!

Andrew247: i've come here to learn <How do I get a transparent background?> and personally i'd love it if you would edit/post exactly 'how' you made your .gif have a transparent background.

also: can people send you an animated.gif with the likely-hood that you'd add it to your site?
and if so: what type of humour?/messages? would you prefer? and what size .gif files would be best?
