I am new to this. How do I get to google chat? Is it compatible with yahoo messenger?

You mean Google Talk? It can be downloaded from the following site -

http://talk.google.com

And you can't chat with users of Yahoo! Messenger through it. To be able to use Google Talk, one should have a GMail ID.

And the usual - "Hi and welcome to Google Community Lisa!".
