Really read this carefully.. its not the usual YADA YADA

You make it sound as it there's really something important - worthy of the user's time because google spent a lot of time on it and think it conveying very important information.

Not really.

During the installation of Google Toolbar, there comes a 'choose your configuration' screen. A place where users have to choose enable or disable pagerank. Google does describe that url being visited by the user would be sent to google.

Now comes the most important part. Let me rephrase that. Now comes the most important part, from user's perspective. Google goes on to say that google wll not provide personally identifiable information to any 3rd parties EXCEPT .. read: yada yada yada.. hey user, if u r so concerned, go click here and read this and read that coz we dont have the time to tell you in simple words about the EXCEPTIONS we will make. perhpas we'll sell your information to the highest bidder or just whomever we like. but wait, we are not going to tell you at this screen, we want to you go there and click that and read whatever.

real mature.Wouldn't it made sense to include the exceptions right on the same page ? is the google toolbar privacy policy so cumbersome that users have to really sit back, take all the time in world and read it and then try to make sense of it ?

disappointed user.BR

Yes, I "read" them...

What I do is, (for Google agreements and every other piece of online agreement and TOS and EULA and such), run it through a nifty little free piece of software called "EULAlyzer" (You can get it at EULA Research Center ) which snags for "suspect phrases" and points them out so's you can inspect them for yourself if you think you have time and want to. (They have a paid-for version, too...)

Gee whiz there's so much legaleeze out there it gets silly!

Comment.

Yeah, unfortunately MicroSoft does that too. Except with MicroSoft, it's even worse: they make you accept the EULA *before* you connect to the internet. So then there's like 70some paragraphs, and each one has, "For more information, go to such and such site", and every one of those sites has a few more pages to read. So, my family and I are really paranoid about reading EULAs, and so we had to take turns sitting there by the computer reading all the extraneous stuff. So as it turns out, MicroSoft by default does pretty much the same thing as Google, with their Search Bar in IE7 and stuff, you just never hear about it because they're the ones who make the OS, and the software you install traps events from the OS, while MicroSoft sends your data for analysis without activating the event trigger; and since they're the ones who make the OS, they can do it. It's just too bad that companies resort to tactics of embedding privacy violation traps in the superlong EULAs to promote their business by catching trends. Google should make an OS.
