Yahoo Desktop Search Beta Released

Gather around for a new discussion:

Yahoo Desktop Search Beta Released

Quote:
Privacy was an issue that plagued Google after release of its desktop search product. Yahoo is addressing that, promising what it calls "advanced privacy controls that ensure Web browser cache and history are not searchable." Yahoo's Desktop Search Beta also allows users to find and play audio or video files without launching a separate media player.

First it was Google (Nasdaq: GOOG) Latest News about Google, then Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT) Latest News about Microsoft and Ask Jeeves (Nasdaq: ASKJ) Latest News about Ask Jeeves. Now Yahoo (Nasdaq: YHOO) Latest News about Yahoo is getting into the latest search battle with today's announcement of the release of its Desktop Search Beta application.

Powered by XI Technologies, the free download indexes the information and content users have on their computer, like e-mails, attachments, documents, music, images and videos. The software allows users to search through more than 200 file types, including Outlook and Outlook Express e-mail, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, html, text, ZIP and mp3.

"We believe that searching the desktop is an important part of the broader search experience and will serve as the platform to provide unique, search-enabled applications that span the user's hard drive, the Yahoo network and the Web," said Jeff Weiner, senior vice president of Yahoo Search and Marketplace.

The article mentions that Google had some privacy issues with the desktop search and Yahoo has addressed those issues in their Yahoo Desktop Search Beta, making them more reliable than Googe. Well, they might even be more reliable than Google, who knows?

Do you think that Google has some serious competition here and need to be carefull? Or do you think that nothing can beat Google and the Yahoo Desktop Search is not a threat to Google? What's your opinion?

i think the privacy wit google is somethin like it keeps logs of were all your files are or somethin, or there names then a hacker could then trick u into submittin them online and he would have the log or somethin, somethin stupid like that that i dont care about, i done even have a firewall, i got no important data here, i do a backup every 2 weeks so i dont care

Personally, the Windows search/find feature is enough for me but the Desktop Search by Google is still a nice tool nonetheless and now that Yahoo has released their own Desktop Search program, they'll have to keep up with their competition. But Google is still going to add more features to their desktop search, and are trying to fix bugs at the same time. ..
Yahoo is a tough competitor/rival for Google and should be taken seriously. I hope Google is able to convey more exposure for their product as well as add more features. That way, they'll be able to attract more users...but I'm sure Google has already thought of this before any of us ...

Heh, I just sent Google an email about "Innovative ftp search" ....
I don't know if they'll consider it but it's still a nifty idea ...

frankly,
i am not sure how the seperate desktop search will be useful, when you have the search facility in the operating system. if you are well organised then you do not need the seach facility and if you are not well organised, then also the search provided in the OS will be sufficient. why a seperate search programme and what is so great about it?

It's faster for Windows in some cases...but it isn't faster than the built-in Windows search when the partition being searched is an NTFS partition and it has the "Index files" option enabled...

I had google desktop for a month or so and tried to justify keeping it , but it is really of no use for me presently. I like to have alot of programs and applications around , but If I don't find myself using them very often I uninstall.
