Google File System

I engaged in conversation about the Google File System with a College student in one of the Computer Science Department's lab. I learned a lot, and it's quite fascinating. Their file system has to manage multi-gigabyte size files. It's amazing! Anyone else have some thoughts on the Google file system?

Well, they do index some 3 billion web pages, while caching most of them at the same time. It's perfect for their type of application.

GMail actually stores messages, but when you flag a message, it will APPEND to the file. The file system is designed to APPEND quickly, but not write (which would involve making room for what you're going to write by moving everything down, then writing, here it just writes everything) and then displays it...it's hard to explain. But it's REALLY neat!
