Replying to Google Groups

Hi,

I know this is a really, really basic question...

I'm new to Google groups. I've found a couple of threads that I want to post a reply to, but they all just have "reply to author" but not "reply."

At first I thought it's because they're really old, but one was 2006.

Why would a thread just have "reply to author?" Do the threads get closed after a period of time so that there can't be any new posts?

i think i get it... maybe its either not yet open to non-members or the groups is moderated...

...same for me!

I have two groups, and had HOPED to start a general public dialog, with topical discussions, but they got "closed" (they're still there, but archived) within two weeks. I thought, "what gives"? I'll watch here for answers...
