Im also a newbie to SEO but I have been blogging for the past year. And one effective strategy for me is to keep on writing "good" articles. Try to keep all your posts as informative as possible. Search Engines like Google checks the content of your website.
So make sure you feed your readers good articles.

get a really nice template and place a good article on it... then submit it to social bookmarking site to get traffic.
