sorting data
I'm trying to create an online directory where users can narrow down a list by selecting different options, like one would if they were sorting an excel spreadsheet. any ideas of how i can do this?

Most likely you will be pulling the directory records from a database. Therefore, to sort into the forms you are wanting you want to look into orderding sql statements (e.g. mysql's ORDER BY). If you want to make the feature more useful to users with javascript enabled look into AJAX to reorder the results.
