How do I send a web idea to Google?

Suppose I have what I think is a good idea for Google, how do I go about sending it to them. Google has an email address

bizdev@google.com

but if you send to it you get a stock reply

"Thank you for your note. While we are not able to personally respond to all proposals, please be assured that we review every email we receive. If our proposal matches our current business and technology development needs, a Google representative will be in touch with you shortly. In the event that we do not identify an immediate match, we will keep your proposal on record for future consideration."

It seems from this that you have to send your idea upfront and open, but then how are you to protect the idea. What's to stop them simply saying "We were thinking along those lines anyway", or "keeping the proposal on record" until they release something similar?

I'm not sure that you can copyright the idea I'm thinking of.

Why not? Most things can be copyrighted unless it has already been done, or is copyrighted by someone else...

Uhmm...what are you talking about? Only works in the sense of art/literature/music/computer programs are under copyright... So macgruder would have to make his own implementation of the idea for it to fall under copyright and even then it wouldn't interfere with anybody doinf their version...
Patent would work in some places with screwed patent rights...but in reality somebody like macgruder would be anyway sued into oblivion and/or buyed by some corporate entity...

macgruder, as for your initiall question: if you're determined in contacting Google and telling them about it, just think to which of their services it is applicable and go its help - there's always email/link for Google gropu regarding the service in which they want you to post such things (note: it might be applicable also to one of the projects form Google labs - but the same thing remains applicable to them)

It's called creating a company and putting your idea to work.

I'll let that one go since messages in the form of text can't really give an impression of being mean or nice, or what not since you can't hear a tone (or maybe you can if you've been in the looney bin).
