Picasa Adds Web Albums

Found this article on PCWorld.com. Google's Picasa now has the web album feature not unlike that of Flikr. This is great, you can now share those Picassa pics on something other than your Blogger account. Article states

Quote:
The test Picasa Web Albums offering is available by invitation only and appears similar to popular photo sharing Web site Flickr.... Web Albums users get 250MB of free storage or can pay $25 to get an additional 6GB of storage. For now, Web Albums is available in English only.
Sign up for an invite to this test run using your gmail google account.

Here is a short blurb from www.download.com ...

Quote:
Google is currently testing a new version of its photo-management app Picasa in private beta that will let users post photo albums on the web via an integrated, Google-hosted service. You can learn some more about the service or put yourself on the beta waiting list at the Picasa Web site. Rafe Needleman at CNet's Web 2.0 Blog has posted a quick review of the functionality. He says at first blush the Picasa integration is quite good and publishing albums "couldn't be simpler." Galleries have nice, human-readable URLs, albums' design is clean and easy to navigate, and other Picasa users can import your photos into Picasa if you allow it. However Needleman identifies a few "snags," including the lack of password-protection for albums you want to keep private and the mysterious absence of captions. His biggest complaint is the lack of synchronization between Picasa and Picasa Web: Once you've uploaded an album, changes to images, titles, etc. in Picasa don't transfer over. He's also unsatisfied with the amount of storage space--only 250MB for free accounts compared to Gmail's 2.7GB+. For $25/year you can get 6GB of storage, but Needleman doesn't think that's a good value, and I'd have to agree. Though he isn't overly impressed with Picasa Web's feature set, he does say, "I don't know of a simpler or faster way to share photos." If you want to see what Picasa Web's online albums look like, take a look at the demo gallery.

250MB is a bit little space After the 2,7G+ Gmail account this is very very little... I want bigger space for my pictures than my e-mails

And if they give just 250MB for our pictures, they won't give infinite storage for our files with GDrive...

Okay, got my invite and had problems installing it, but it was my virus finder, and all is well now....It is actually quite neat and works in conjunction with picasa2....You upload photos from picasa2 to the picasa web album, and you have a lot of control over the pics, either making them private or public...Like it a lot, except for the small amount of space you actually get for them(250mb)...Hope some day they see the errors of their ways and actually bump the storage capabilites to around 2G or so....But they are clear, clean pics and this programme should work out to be another winner for picasa....

Giving 2G for mail is much easier than doing it for photos - most users won't even reach 1% of their mail account capacity while with photos it is very easy to reach it and since they are interested with the mean use it will be very hard for them to give 2G for every body.

Anyway I would really like to test it, can anyone invite me?

Eyal

mondine is an unknown quantity at this point
I believe that you have to go and sign up at the site, and wait for them to invite you.

Doesn't seem to work that way with this programme. Have looked around and the only way I see to get an invite is to register....It doesn't take long to get an invite though....

Awesome. I requested invite.

It would be really great if they could compete with flickr and photobucket...

Lets see what gadgets they have.
