Tocelebrateher fourth birthday, Nancy'smummy and daddy bought her a rather cheap bottle of perfume and an inexpensive watch.

Nancy was so thrilled with her presents that, all day long, she pestered her mummy and daddy asking them to smell her perfume and listen to the ticking of her new watch.

"Mummy, Daddy, listen to the ticking of my new watch and smell my new perfume," she would say. This went on relentlessly all day, until in the end, her exasperated mother said to her:

"Nancy, this has got to stop. Father Murphy will be here any moment for tea and you must promise your father and I that you won't say anything about your watch or your perfume. Do you understand?

Reluctantly, Nancy agreed and promised not to mention her perfume or her new watch to Father Murphy.

Later, that evening, after tea, and as Father Murphy was leaving,Nancy couldn't restrain herself no longer and tuggedonFather Murphy's coat tails.

"Father Murphy, Father Murphy," she said, earnestly.

"Yes, my child," said Father Murphy, as he bent down to listen to what Nancy had to say.

"Father, if you heard a little noise and smelled a little smell......[b]it was me!/[b]"
