This is mostly bullocks. First of all, there haven't been such research performed on a Cambridge uni, ever. It is at most based on one doctorate form Nottingham university from 1976.

Here you have contrargument from University of British Columbia (this time real), using exactly the same rule:

"Anidroccg to crad cniyrrag lcitsiugnis planoissefors at an uemannd,
utisreviny in Bsitirh Cibmuloa, and crartnoy to the duoibus cmials of
the ueticnd rcraeseh, a slpmie, macinahcel ioisrevnn of ianretnl
cretcarahs araepps sneiciffut to csufnoe the eadyrevy oekoolnr."

Understand anything?

BTW, below you have site of somebody employed in Cognition and Brain Sciences Unit from Cambridge (yes, from where it presumably originated ...)

http://www.mrc-cbu.cam.ac.uk/persona...vis/Cmabrigde/

Overall: don't believe in something just because it is posted in the net and claimed to be work of some uni - the best thing about Internet is that you can actually go to uni website and check

There are quite a few things on the net, or passed on to us by friends, the sources of which cannot always be verified. It is also not very important enough for us to verify each and every forward or article unless we are conducting research on the concerned topic.

My suggestion is not to take such things too seriously.

You are completelly off base. I'm not taking this specific thing seriously, which my post clearly illustrates. However, you have to ask yourself, how many people would take it seriously if I hadn't respond to it?
Even at my faculty at uni (psychology, so we basically deal with such stuff) there were people believing it! Do you really want misinformation to freely wander among people?

Urban myths spread in this way. Many of which are harmfull (not this one, sure - but it's better to be consistent with dealing with such stuff).

I agree with you about Urban Myths being harmful, and this not being one of them. Anyways, thanks for clarifying.

Well, in my opinion this thing has become one of them. As I've said, it's not among the harmfull ones, but still...it's better IMHO to try not letting any urban myths spread, that way the harmfull ones will also be more rare.
