subdomains effect on seo

Hi brI would like to ask for your opinions about subdomains.brI know it has a better weight on se than using folders. It has better branding and organization of the site. brBut the question is this I have a site and its been using folders for quite some time http://www.domain.com/section1/ and already ranking good and lots of backlinks, will there be a problem if I change it to section1.domain.com ? what can I do to prevent this?brPlease help...brThanks in advance and more power to all.brbr

That is a bad idea... brbrGoogle considers all subdomains to be completely unique webpages, and thus they have to start from square one on a pagerank and indexing level.brbrThis means that if you plan to make that "section 1" its own subdomain you will have to do just as much linkbuilding to that subdomain as you do to your main site in order to reap any rewards. It is completely NOT worth it. brbrYou are better off concentrating your efforts on building backlinks to your main site and put many sections underneath it. This will lead to the pagerank easily passing through to the sections and the quick indexing of newly added additional sections.brbrThe only time that a subdomain would be appropriate is when you are planning on creating another site on a completely unique and separate topic, and in that case you would have to treat it as its own project (link build, ect.).br

You can create your subdomain and do a 301 re-direct from your folder to the subdomain. Google does rank subs if they come from trusted sites - Go to Google and enter "seo articles" (no quotes) and you'll see my subdomain site show up #1 (as of 8.15.2006) - it's all about sticking to one topic and building links and content around that one topic.

Do take into consideration that Subdomains are treated as separate sites. They are generally useful to keep a main site from getting out of theme with a page or a forum that may contain non-related information. As mentioned, you are better off using subfolders and concentrate on backlinks to main domain and let it's pass on to the subfolders.

Yes, but keep in mind that you are better offer with a subdomain than a regular domain if you are not actively pursuing link-building with your main site.

Well there will be a problem because the links you have are the links pointing your folder but if you changeyour folderto a domain then your PR and rankings will drop.

Thanks for all the responses.
I will consider it when finalizing my decision in changing subfolder to subdomain.

I would suggest keeping your main site on the www subdomain and using a couple of subdomains for slightly different topics.

Dont even think to do that you will lose all the links and your rankings would be gone forever, just carry on with what you have.
