Logically there is no difference between SE positioning and SEO optimization
we optimize the page to attain good position in SE. SEO main task is to get good position in SE, therefore SEO is for SE positioning

as what they've all said...doing SEO on your site will result something on your SE positioning...so better do everything for your on-page and off-page optimization and see a great result on your SERPs...
