Description meta tag, effective or useless?

Hi,

It is a long time that search engines and specially Google don't pay any attention to keyword meta tag but they still use the description meta tag as the description of the websites on their search result pages. Of course, in most search queries, Google displays a part of the body text that includes the search term. So the description is used in some cases only.

On the other hand, I have seen many web pages that have no description meta tag, ranked properly.
So my question is if description meta tag is still important or has lost its role?
Is it effective in the ranking of the websites?

Really dont know if it helps your SERPs position, but it will definitely help your position on SERPs by giving a description that entices your viewers to click through.

IMO, it is important. it gives an idea or description for the visitors to click the link of your site in SERPs.

nothing to lose in placing META Description.

meta tags for my opinion is not that important but a part of optimization... i agree with princess that you've nothing to loose if you added meta tags to your pages..

IMO and from what other webmaster told so meta tags wasn't important nowadays...but still through that you can say to your visitors what kind of site do you have when they sees it trough SEs...and we don't know it might still be one of the factors that SEs see through when ranking our site though it might be on the least important and just gave little credit...so why not give it a shot...you have nothing to loose just a little time on putting your meta tags on your site...

Dear Friend Although meta tag is not considering by Google but it is very important to give the relevancy strength for your page. The Search Engine other than google give heavy weightage to these meta tags specially Keywords tags.

So According to me description should be well defined and relevant to the page. and keyword tag may be used as supplement for your page to keepmaintaining position if the keywords are relevant.

So dont remove description tags.
