to become a seo expert you need to know a lot about seo (read forums, test it yourself) and then become good at it, then you'll be a seo expert.

Yep, you kinda learn the process when you do it yourself.
Read and try it, fail and fix it, then you'll become a real expert.
You may forget others mistakes, but you'll hardly forget yours
