First thing to do is to have a unique quality content on your site.

I agree.. and also make your site easy to crawl by SEs.. avoid using embedded scripts, instead save it as other file and call it your page... and just don't mess with SEs..

* keyword stuffing
* hidden text or hidden links
* pages loaded with irrelevant words
* duplicated content on multiple pages
* misspelling of well-known web sites
