Blogging is very important for SEO purpose. One main reason is Search engine likes Fresh contents. so when u frequently blog for any website, the spiders visits (relevant to search) to the website aand enhances your chances to rank higher in SERP's!

you can link your blog to your site.. you can also write some reviews about your site, products, or anything that your site offer... which can help your site..

Personally, I've made a few posts on my blog and they gone supplemental even that it was original content, I think this happened because it lacked backlinks, but yes, I think blogging is good in general. If you don't have a web site, blogging is an alternative for one.
