i'm a bit confused on how blog helps and affects the ranking in terms of backlinks and traffic.. can somebody help me understand it? thanks!

You can get traffic from your blog. For that, you have to update your blog daily. You can give links to your site from your blog.

it really depends how your article is well-written and insert links in some keywords inside the article content..
