Ethical SEO guide discussion: Chapter One - What is ethical organic optimisation?
Hi all,
You may or may not have seen the new Content Center on Google Community, but Elliot has kindly agreed to serialise a selection of unique guides to ethical search engine optimisation. I am writing each of these guides uniquely for Google Community, so don't expect to find the information elsewhere Onto the juicy stuff, the first chapter can be found here:-Of course, discussion is welcomed and I'd love to hear your thoughts on each chapter and the principles discussed within them. Please feel free to discuss the content here and I'll be more than happy to answer any questions anyone may have. Enjoy -tamecrow

Ethics and ideals
I have formed a thought in my head during the past year I have studied SEO. That thought can be described with one line: Ethical and good SEO = good web design.
Good web design meaning here: proper code, user-friendly layout, quality information about the subject. If you think an ideal web page or even ideal internet, what it should be and what it was long ago on paper as a plan of bunch of computers connecting over communication lines: There would be one page about one subject containing as much as information about the subject divided to sub-pages with logical hierarchy. On a single page, there would be a short and descriptive title, meta keywords and other meta data would describe the page content accurately. Page headings would contain keywords because there would be no other choice. (I know that after this somebody lets out a sigh: Google discards the meta keywords etc. !everybody knows that! but bear with me, we have now forgotten the Google and the top rankings and entered the ideal utopia) When you think about the ideal internet and what it would/should be, a lot of things sound like good SEO. What would you think that Google wants? Happy users. What we (users) want? Information. Fresh information. Accurate information. How Google rates pages? No one really knows, but we know that it happens according to an algorithm. That algo maybe more advanced than any of us can imagine but I would bet that one of the key factor along with good content is how valid your code is. In this inperfect world the valid code is a sign of effort creating good user experience. Add the components which the idealist creators of html (and other mark-up language) would like you to use to describe the information on your web page. In conclusion, I think that good SEO and web design are tightly interlaced and I feel that this aspect is generally overlooked when talked about SEO. |
