Yeah, this has been talked about for about a year now. Of course, some 'stealth' paid links are impossible to detect, but clearly contrived links are a big no-no... If you believe what Matt Cutts says

Personally, I never felt big love for link farms or links directories, they are good for PR, but they have 0% value for people, as all they do is gather links and show them in 1.2.3 order. When I search for something I never land on those type web sites and that's because google does good job filtering them out.

As for me I don't focus to much on my page rank. I think becuase it will not give me much traffic from PR I just focus on my SERP.

who doesn't want high PR? I believe all of us wants that!

we can't blame some site that offers ad placement because it is another way of getting income.. don't know why google prevent this thing...have you ever think that this can be their strategy to get their adwords services instead of placing links from good sites? hmmm...
