best bet would be to find some big directories, go to google and type link:directoryurl

This will give you a massive list of all the backlinks going into that directory, select the best ones and try gain backlinks.

Also take the categories on your directory and search each one in googles blog engine, use those blogs to create backlinks as well through the comment field.

another way to promote your directory is by writing articles about it and press release about your directory but the best way is by the use of forum postings and promotions.
