I think As long as the content are similar and more improved, I don't see any problems with doing this.

When it comes to website redirection 301 redirect is the most effective and Search Engine Friendly method. It's not that hard to implement and it should preserve your search engine rankings for that particular page. If you have to change file names or move pages around, it's the safest option. The code "301" is interpreted as "moved permanently".

could it be that they had links done formally before and then just did a 301 redirect after the links were live.
