Red face Redirects – Are they OK with Google?

Question for the experts. We have a competitor that has some domain names that are essentially keywords such as sandiegomovers.net. But if you type in this domain, you get a quick redirect to their real website. They are not hosting their real website on this other domain, it is just an instant redirect.

Does this help them with Google? Does it hurt them? What purpose is this other website if it is not their real one and only has a redirect?

The reason I ask is that I have several similar domains I would like to do the same thing with but don’t know if there are any negative ramifications.

Thanks for your advice.

Bryan

lolz... me too
But some of its purpose aren't bad enough. When your site needs some maintenance or it has been moved. It's the best way of doing it so.

Sometimes when businesses start up they will buy a few domain names just to protect their product or business name. I think that this is legitimate as long as the domain names are related to the business name. I doubt it has any effect with google.

I don't think they did this for any reason such as moving their site.. I think they did it as they think it somehow helps them with marketing. Any other thoughts how it could benefit them?

I think if necessary to do redirections within your site, then I don't think it would do you any hurt.
