Is Google Now Penalizing Backlinks?

I'm a webmaster with about 20 sites that I manage. Lately, I've heard from several people who are not in SEO, and one client, that incoming links from relevant sites is no longer a good thing to help Google rank a site higher, in fact they are actually penalizing a site for them. I think this is bunk, because my agency's site ranks #1 or #2 all the time under my main to products and I have many, many backlinks...but only from good sites, no link farms or junk spam sites.

I cannot find a word anywhere that explains if backlinks are now taboo at Google. Any help, anyone?

Haven't yet heard abt whether Google is looking for Penilizing Backlinks and what may the genuine reson for Google to do that. This won't be a fruitful attemp unless google plans to look for Link Farms and other Black Hat Seo Techniques.

Backlinks are still the one of the most important elements for your site to rank on Google, either in PR or in SERP...
Having quality back links from quality related sites can be very valuable in order to have decent SERP rankings...
It also help increase your PR because PR is calculated based on link algorithm...
Links pointing to your site can be counted as votes that leads to high PR...

Absolutely...
You should stay away from link farms because Google is keeping their eyes on them...
You should also keep away from sites involved with buying and selling of links because most of them have loss their rankings...
And try minimize your reciprocal links...

I've heard a lot of SEO rumors but never like this one.

In my opinion this rumor is bogus.

Links are very important to your sites search engine rankings and statistics. The affect of the link can be predetermined by the statistics of the link itself. Regardless of the link having a high or low Page Rank, the link will be helpful. Relevant sites linking to you via correctly structured text links are in your benefit.

Link farms have and will always be frowned upon. Do not try to trick the system and the system will work with you. Don't be caught up in quantity, focus on the quality of the link. Achieving quality links is time consuming and down right annoying but it is a major factor in your search engine results.

I'm new in SEO but i've learned that backlink is very important element for your page to rank. As an SEo we have to avoid using link farm and black hat because this could be grounds for banning.

i agree with you buying and selling links has been penalized by google.
