What does it take to be the BEST SEO'er?

I am very interested in learning the ropes of SEO. But I am wondering what does it take to be a good if not the BEST SEO'er? What are the skills required? Is there any software needed? Hope to get tips from you guys cause I know that this is where the best SEO'ers hang-out.

Well it will take a lot of time, study, and dedication.

I have been in the industry "learning the ropes" for about 4 years now. One thing you quickly learn is that this industry is ever changing. YOU NEVER STOP LEARNING. There is no one set rule book that will make you the best SEO'er for ever. The rules and methods (some of them) change consistently.

The best SEO'er will never use software.
The best SEO'er never stops testing and applying new techniques and ideas.

My best advice for you is to keep reading, keep testing, and never give up. READ READ READ, LEARN LEARN LEARN.

The best way to learn is by trial and error. Pick a fairly easy industry, create a test website and test out techniques you learn and apply new ideas to it. Monitor it closely and see how you do.

Oh yeah and the best SEO'ers never stop asking questions. So keep the questions coming.

it needs a lot of patience... SEO techniques are not that hard to understand but all it needs is patience....

just don't do anything outside the white hat SEO technique..

Thanks leftybogs

If you think optimizing your site is a one part deal your site will suffer. Optimization is constant. Knowledge in this industry and practice is paramount. Stay on top of the latest trends and methods and you should be fine.

TO BE THE BEST
You would need to know:
HTML
PHP
XML
CSS
PERL
MySQL
ASP
JAVA
JSP
and MORE

You are welcome to add to this list.

The list goes on. On top of knowing how to program in multiple languages you would have to stay on top of all search engine activity and new trends.

to branch out even more and be the best'est seo'er you would need to be a network junkie. Constantly building networks of people and businesses.

You'd also have to be able to write proper content. Have a blog, a news site, or a forum.

I don't think there is such thing as "the best seo'er". There are just people who know things you don't know. People that are better at it then you are. This is why we network with each other, trading idea's, problems, and solutions.
