Just like with any website that ranks, there are certain factors which come together to build that ranking. Blogs and forums have the upper hand when it comes down to SERPs because their human ran and maintained; They are also contently updated with new information and viewed by the masses. Just like DMOZ, Google gives a lot of respect to anything thats manual ran and maintained.

If you create a nicely written thread which gains popularity in the forum I am 100% sure it will rank for its targeted keyword. However this all depends on the difficulty of the keyword. I doubt a forum post will rank in the top 10 for "Search Engine Optimization"

Its people like us that give these threads so much power...

let me explain it to you when you make your post or thread the title you put on the thread will serve as your keyword so as you can see if you type something mostly it comes from forum right? so if you do that your site will have the chance to get expose and get tons of traffic.
