FFA sites are "free for all" sites.

They are sites which are made with the only intention to link sites together. Its a link farm. These sites house no useful information, usually house no content, and usually go against ever ethical law the search engines have (well except maybe the 4th tier engines).

NEVER EVER link to a site whos sole purpose is to link other sites together.

There is so much out there about links, links, links and after spending oodles of time working on and improving a website the last thing you want to do is fall into this trap.

What about reciprocal link request service sites such as LinkMarket or Link2Me? Should those be avoided too? These are the ones where you can contact other sites in their directories and request a reciprocal link.

Can you give some examples of what to avoid?

Avoid link farms
Avoid FFA (free for all) sites
Avoid Spam sites
Avoid banned or penalized sites

Only link to ethical sites which actually have a purpose.

Reciprocal links aren't bad but not as good as "one way in coming links".

Its kind of like me giving you a dollar and you giving me a dollar, no one really wins from the transaction, but no one loses.

You having 2000 links and giving out 2000 links is not the same as you getting 2000 links while only giving out 200.

Networking with other webmasters and devising a link plan will be in the best of your interest.
