Based on my experience. Having backlinks to sites that are not related to the site you are link building still increases the rank of your site. I just make sure that the sites that I have back links have a high PR rating.

Do as much as you can -- get whatever links you can! I found submitting to sites like AdWido crucial to linkbuilding and increasing exposure.

As long as the backlinks are dofollow, definitely will contribute to our SERP value. Just avoid links exchange with non-relevant sites. It'll cause penalization from google.

getting links from relevant category and titles from quality sites.
Not the quantity, just the quality.

It is always Quality than Quantity that matters.

Choosing the most quality links for your site is the best way to gain traffic and good stand in SERPs.

My Lancaster hotel website has a few links in google now.

I make sure that links are quality.

well, the irrelevent links won't hurt u anyway, and plus, they drove u more general traffic.

It won't bring u any negative effect, but non-relevent links are also not gonna help u alot.
