How DO I Best Use TRACKBACKS?

Hi

I KNOW I should be using Trackbacks and see them everywhere (including on here) but haven't a clue how to use them.

I believe it's to do with making posts on, say, a Blog of my own and submitting and then I'm not sure what happens. Must be something better than merely quoting extracts from another Blog.

Help please?
