SEO vs SEM what's the difference?

Since I live in the industry, I can't tell you how many times a client confuses the two. Simply put, SEO is the work done to your site, and SEM is getting traffic to your site.

heh, I was about to state what tocoy just said so just to give an example:

SEO tackles meta tags, titles, keyword density, good html coding, and so on and so forth.

SEM tackles PPC, search engine submission, paid inclusion, directories submission, and the likes.

I agree with that Smile
That's part of the problem - they're not the same.

SEO is equal to having a brick and mortar business. Optimizing your site makes it search engine friendly so that when people come to your site (and spiders) - all by SEM - they will find a crisp and cleanly formatted website.

SEM is equal to the advertising of the business. Sure, you may get the occasional visitor who stumbles into your site by accident, but if you don't tell the Internet world you're out there, you won't be in business for too long.

SEO and SEM are as different as PR from Advertising. In PR there are no guarantees, but you can score big with a relatively small investment. With Advertising, you only get as much out of it as you put into it. They are very different animals. I posted about it here http://www.mike-levin.com/blog/2005/...iple-play.html
