its like a gigantic online community like friendster as intelliot stated. You can create and join multiple communities and meet new friends and stuff like that. I give orkut a thumbs up.

I like Orkut, but I think it's a bit simple. The graphics could be a bit better, and it fades user pictures.
It has more features than, lets say, Yahoo! Groups, and it looks nicer, and all. Maybe they should add a chatroom for communities? It would attract people more. OT (Off Topic): May I add to massacre that your signature's BB code is a bit messed up and is not ended correctly. |

couldn't agree more, i think orkut's interface look's simple and unprofessional .. not something we are used to expect from anything related to google.
i think google should endorse orkut and make it part of it's features (is it planned already ?) that way more people will work on orkut and make it better and it will offer full integration with other google features. |

I agree that Orkut interface looks kind of cutesy, but it is still in the beta stage. The concept is very powerful and may actually fly with Google behind it.
The trusted friends idea coupled with the Orkut communities strikes me as being a candidate for "Usenet Reloaded" (or "Usenet Next Generation", or whatever...) Google would be smart to keep the service free and publish the resulting content generated by all of the community activity as part of the public Google search. Google would then have an additional exclusive source of deep content to offer that other search competitors such as MSN and Yahoo wouldn't have. Think of beekeeping: provide the bees with a house, food, and free rent; profit from the honey. |
