Orkut Login Problems

Got my invite and followed the account validation link on 10/1; all good.

Tried to login today 10/3, and get this:

Invitation failed

The reason might be one of the following:

You entered a wrong email address
You have not enabled JavaScript on your browser
Your browser is not accepting cookies
You already accepted the invitation and signed up
The url specified is invalid
If you are using Hotmail, you may need to copy and paste this URL into a new Internet Explorer window

If you know someone who is a member of orkut, have them invite you to join.

FIREFOX 1.0.7
Very careful to not typo email or pwd.
Same result with and without proxy.

How are you trying to sign in? Are you trying to use their validation link, again, or going directly to the sign-in page?
Try https://www.orkut.com

Make sure you have cookies enabled. You could also try clearing your cache, in case your browser is redirecting to an old page, automatically.

Oh, should have added that cookies explicitly allowed from orkut and cache cleared a couple of times. Javascript is all happy, too. Hadn't tried SSL login before, but alas, same results so far.

I do use a proxy most of the time, which can sometimes cause issues, but in this case the error is identical with and without proxy.

What's a bit odd is that the system let me login to validate my invite (proxy ON), initially, and none of my settings have changed since then.

For the benefit of future solution seekers, this is not a password problem, as you can't even get to this error page with the wrong password.

Odds are that it's something on my end, but for the life of me, haven't tracked it down yet. Thanks for any other ideas if you think of sumpin'.

Hmm. That's a puzzle, all right. Hard to say what's going on, with that laundry list of an error message they've used.

So, just to be clear, there was no problem in establishing the account? They did confirm that the account had been created successfully?

And this error page comes after an attempted sign-in/ log-on?

Have you tried another browser, if only to confirm it's not a problem on their end?

Ooo! Let's try this nifty quick reply window at bottom of Google Comoonity Forum.

Back to business ...

* I seem to recall something along the lines of "congratulation, you've confirmed your orkut account" or something like that, on the initial click of the confirmation link. To perfectly honest, though, it was like the middle of the night and I wasn't paying as close attention as usual. And "usual" probably isn't impressive in the first case. So this could indeed be a PEBKAC condition, but no good ideas on how to check this. Happy to listen.

* Yes, it's AFTER login. If I put I a wrong pwd, it leaves me at the login page with red text, "Username and password do not match," below the pwd text box.

Just tried Opera, Avant, and IE.

* Opera 8.5 build 7700 (paid): Orkut hangs with a
white-text-on-red "Loading" notice in the top left
corner of the orkut login box, w/ and w/o proxy.

* Avant 10.1 build 28: Same as original problem both
w/ and w/o proxy.

* IE 6.0.2900.2180.xpsp_sp2_gdr.050301-1519
(Nice simple version syntax, eh?)
Same as original problem, w/ and w/o proxy.

* For login, I'm using my full gmail address, as used to sign up, as opposed to a standalone orkut username.

p.s. Gotta' get me a CafePress t-shirt with "Just Because. That's Why." Great tagline.

Hmm. Did you try just the user name (without the "@gmail.com] bit)? That's what I use to log in.

K. So when I try that, I get the same error, but when I go back a page, the Orkut login box has this pre-filled in:

Username/Email: [email]myactualloginname@gmail.com[/url]
Password:

So it looks like either single name or email should work, although it seems to prefer the full email address if the prefill (wrong terminology, i'm sure) is any indication. I'm leary of the original setup. Did I really ever get it right the first time? I think I did, but wish there was a way to confirm that. I wrote email confirming receipt of the invite to the person who invited me, per the instructions, and updated my entry in the Orkut Invites Forum, per instructions; but don't want to spam that original forum cuz' it's only for invites.

Maybe I should email original inviter dude to check this thread. I'll do that to see if he has any suggestions, too.

I wonder if that's the problem. Perhaps the incorrect name is being filled in by auto-log in. But I guess that wouldn't explain the failure in other browsers (unless you had entered the name incorrectly in them, as well).

Maybe, try clearing the cookies, again, and removing the entries under Tools; Options; Privacy; Saved Passwords. Couldn't hurt trying, at this point.

Okay. So cleared, cleared, cleared and then I contacted my very cool inviter dude, who was happy to re-invite me. Still no joy across all four browsers w/ or w/o proxy. Now I remember why I was a little confused about having initially chosen a password or not. When you get the email invite (sample below) it simply says, "go to orkut" to accept the invite. At that page, it says to "Sign in to orkut with your orkut login
or Google account"; ostensibly, that means existing gmail and password, as far as I can tell. This is what is not working for me.

So, below is the latest iteration with my inviter friend from "Get your Orkut Invites Here" Forum, and who's ID I'm withholding because I didn't ask his permission to use it here.

--- my latest email to INVITER ---

Hi INVITER,

I did what the invitation email suggests ... went to www.orkut.com ... entered my gmail and gmail password (since it says to use your orkut username or "GOOGLE Account") and got the same ol', same ol', but pretty sure all of this is in working order, per the thread in community forum. Thanks for all the extra time messin with this. It sure seems like I must have something screwed up.

QUESTION: Is there supposed to be a specific URL other than the generic www.orkut.com in the Invitation Email? If so, I haven't seen one yet.

Yes, the "invitation" URL is distinct. It'll look like
Code:
http://www.orkut.com/Join.aspx?id=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
For what it's worth, when I signed up, I just used my Gmail name and password, and went right in to the configuration pages. No problem, since.

Now, I'm not quite clear on one thing. Did your inviter send you a new invitation? It would be a possible problem if it was the same invitation that was re-sent, that could have now expired, or been associated with the account that's now inexplicably crippled. Which unfortunately leads to another question. If your Gmail address did in fact become associated with a boinked account, will it preclude you from using it for a new one? I don't know.

And, by the way, you have no problem just logging into the gmail account?
Maybe if we get all the facts in a pile, it'll start looking like something...
