My immediate thought would be to have somewhere on the profile: last online 12 hours ago

or something like that - then maybe I wouldn't be pursuing these people who may not even remember they signed up at orkut - I hate feeling like a stalker.

*grin*

Yeah, it is sad for sure. Now is the time they needed it to be a great service, but its far from it. With Google rolling out all these great services, Orkut should have been ready to compete with the big boys by now. They could have really made a dent. Instead, Orkut looks more like a fancied-up discussion forum, rather than a feature rich community service.

So its like you said, people sign up, look around then never come back & go back to some crappy service (like myspace). I had 3 different friends who quit myspace, joined Orkut, got bored & re-joined myspace. Sad.

Well, I found an article on the wikipedia site about Orkut. Seems its much worse than I thought. If this is all true, I really think Orkut's a lost cause & Google should either sell it or shut it down, then completly start from scratch.

Here is the article:

It seemed like Kerry had tried Orkut and the community wasn't living up to his expectations, so I suggested another one. I have a Wallop account, too. It's much more to my liking, I'll admit it. Kerry ended his post with "any other suggestions", so I was giving him one. I'm a fan of certain programs/communities, but I'm not bound by any of them. I use Firefox 1.5.0.1 (soon to be 2.0)and IE 7 beta 2. We all want to try different things to find out what's best for us. All of these programs/communities are ever changing and improving as time goes on. Try everything and then decide what you like. In the end, I want you to use what you like, regardless of vendor. If your happy, then I've done my job as a member here.

Why is this surprising/worth debating for anyone?
Don't you see that's because of so many betas? Not every Google product will turn out great...and they want it that way.

Well, it being a beta isnt really an excuse. Thats just a label they throw on it so people will be more forgiving when they use ther products. All of Google's products are beta so thats really not an excuse.

Point is, they have had plenty of time to get this going & it just doesnt live up to the high standards of Google. Orkut & Google Video are pretty terrible & I think even the big wigs at Google would tell you that.

Maybe they should stop trying to compete with Apple & stop trying to do everything else under the sun so fast & concentrate on a few things at a time to make those things awesome. Instead, they are releasing all these "beta" mediocre products & losing focus.

I only say this 'cause I usually love Google's products, but they have kinda been sucking lately.

I think a lot of the problems are due to a couple of simple things. One, that it wasn't actually developed as a Google product (look at their pages. At the bottom of each, it still says "in affiliation with Google".
The other is that it was so early adopted and dominated by non-English speakers.

Now, I'm not going to knock them, or say that they don't have an equal right to belong, but there has been a lot of frustration for English language users that have to constantly wander around to find a place that they can communicate with other people.

Even when a community is established using English, there's been no guarantee that it'll stay that way. It's just another frustration. One that might be harder to fix in the long run than their well-known server problems,

Yup, you are right. Really no way to fix that. Not knocking the brazilians at all, but it is very frustrating when the communities say "english only" and its anything but.

Cant really shut it down 'cause that would piss a whole bunch of people off, so what to do? I say sell it & start a new one from scratch because at this point, its too far gone & a lost cause.

Just look at the numbers:

I didn't realise the numbers were that big for Brazil

Kerry, that's precizelly their way of doing things: not be arrogand - let users decide which of their products are great and which sucks. But that requires pushing them out the door.
