It fortunately worked for them and became a disastrous turn of events for the French when Zizu got the red card. Without their captain and their best playmaker on the field they became easy pickings for the confident Italians.

I think that it came down to bad penalties in the end. Zidane would have taken one, but Trezeguet should have scored too, he's a striker after all.
