This morning news broke all across the web (I've got some coverage at my other blog,) that Microsoft announced that sometime this summer they'll be releasing the first beta version of an IE 7. It sounds like they plan on having multiple betas so it's likely that no final release would happen before the end of the year -- and for users of Windows XP SP2 only. (That is, assuming you believe this is anything more than just a stalling tactic while they try to finish up Longhorn.)

There is no promised featureset and I don't think anyone expects there to be any significant improvements to the core rendering technology so web developers should continue to put the pressure on Microsoft.

I know you all will have some reactions and opinions, so consider this a good place to make your voice heard. I expect that the press and the industry will be paying close attention to what we have to say so use your voice here at Spread Firefox to let them know what you think about Microsoft's abrupt turnaround. Cnet seems to think it's a reaction to Firefox.

I agree that MS needs to put something out, even if its in beta in order to stem the tide. If it was really about security... then what was it that we all downloaded last Tuesday.
