Filtering Traffic Data vs. Hiding Information on Reports
Is there anyone out there that has ever used filters that can validate how they work? Here is my understanding of how Google Analytics Filters work (I was told this through the Google Analytics Help / Support Forum):
a) For as long as pages get hit and those pages contain the "GA pageTracker() scripting code", Google accumulates and stores the activity data in log files. b) Then every time you run G.A. reports - without any filters whatsoever - your GA reports are in essence a representation of complete log file data. c) But the moment you create a filter rule and apply it to a particular GA Profile, the log file data is parsed based on the filter rule(s) and the filtered data is permanently deleted and can never be retrieved and viewed again in the future. d) And even if you disable or turn off a filter rule at some point down the road, the data that was once filtered (or "deleted") can never appear again in any subsequent GA Report. Can this be confirmed by anyone? I have been advised to create a duplicate "raw" unfiltered profile. How do you create a duplicate profile? Do you replicate and add a second instance of the entire JavaScript to the Web Page and change only the GA Tracking Code within the 2nd set of script tags? Or do you merely add a second function call to the pageTracker/pageView() function using the unfiltered profile Web Property ID? Exactly how is this done? Thank you very much for helping to clarify this for me. |
