Problem: GMail Chat vs. Firefox

Hey there,

Hi, I'm a new member and I hope this hasn't been asked before: I like the new Google Chat but I can't get it to work on Firefox. At work I use IE (no problem there), but at home I use the latest Firefox (1.5) and Chat won't show up. I have since read up on it and according to Google, Chat won't work if you connect to GMail on a secure (i.e. https setting. Trouble is, Firefox will not connect any other way. It automatically put in the https: header, even if I remove it.

I've tried mucking about in the Options... menu, nothing. I'm running a few Google extensions (Googlebar Lite and GMail Manager) but I don't see anything there.

So if there's anyone out there with Firefox experience that could tell me how I can tweak it so it won't autonatically put the https: in there? Thanks for any help.

-SJ

The feature hasn't been added to my account yet, so I can't test this.
But anyway, I think the secure connection may be a function of your Gmail sign-in saved preferences.
Try clearing your cookies, cache and browser history.
(My gmail does default to the http address -as opposed to the https.)

I'm using the new Google Talk in Gmail, and it works fine in Firefox 1.5. In fact, it works perfectly, and I think it's awesome. If only we could add it as a feature here at GoogleCommunity...

I did a quick search for you on the MozillaZine Knowledge Base and came up with this information. That page states that if you have the Adblock Firefox extention installed, Google Chat will crash. InformationWeek also has an article about this titled Google: Gmail Chat Users Should Disable Firefox AdBlock. Please let me know if this solves your problem.

Thanks for the information, Randy. I'll have to test this out.
I guess if it means just disabling (not uninstalling) it, I can live with it. But there's no way I'd go without Adblock altogether.
I suppose this is why some people were reporting that IE worked, when their Firefox wasn't. (I'm not even going to think about that!)

I might do some experimenting with some other browsers/shells, though.
But that would be just to have open in the background.

Hey there,

Well I figured it out. I'm running the CustomizeGoogle extension and it has a security setting to change all Google URLs to https:. Just unchecked the box, cleared my cookies/cache/history and restarted Firefox. Problem solved and I didn't have to uninstall AdBlock.

Thanks for all the help, guys.

Yes, that would certainly explain that. It can be pretty hard to keep track of all the possible modifications, with Firefox.
Thanks for letting us know.
